Experience
McMaster-Carr
Supported supply chain operations within a highly standardized distribution environment while contributing to workplace safety, ergonomics, and process improvement initiatives across a workforce of approximately 500 employees.
Overview
McMaster-Carr is known for its operational excellence, attention to detail, and commitment to serving customers accurately and efficiently. Working within this environment exposed me to the importance of standardized processes, quality control, safety, and continuous improvement at scale.
During my time there, I supported high-volume order fulfillment operations, managed material traceability requirements, processed custom material orders, and later served as an Ergonomic Coach focused on employee safety, onboarding, and injury prevention.
Supply Chain Operations
As a Supply Chain Operations Associate, I worked in a fast-paced and highly organized distribution environment responsible for fulfilling hundreds of customer orders each day while maintaining strict accuracy standards.
Responsibilities included interpreting order specifications, processing custom material requests, maintaining material certification and traceability documentation, and verifying fulfillment requirements before shipment. These activities required strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to quality and consistency.
The role also provided exposure to how large-scale distribution systems operate, including inventory flow, process standardization, documentation control, and customer-focused fulfillment.
Ergonomics & Safety
In addition to operational responsibilities, I served as an Ergonomic Coach responsible for promoting safe work practices and helping employees reduce injury risk during daily operations.
The role involved conducting regular observation and coaching sessions, onboarding new employees into company ergonomics programs, identifying workplace risks, and recommending improvements to work habits and task execution.
Many recommendations focused on reducing repetitive strain and improving long-term employee well-being. Examples included optimizing product placement to minimize excessive reaching, bending, and lifting while encouraging proper movement techniques during repetitive tasks.
My goal was not simply to help employees work faster, but to help them work safely and sustainably so they could leave work in the same condition they arrived.
Operational Excellence
One of the most valuable aspects of working at McMaster-Carr was learning how small decisions can create significant downstream consequences when repeated hundreds or thousands of times. Accuracy, organization, and consistency were treated as essential components of every process.
Through ergonomics and safety initiatives, I collaborated with teams across four distribution centers to share observations, discuss emerging trends, and exchange best practices. These discussions helped improve operational consistency while reinforcing a culture of continuous improvement.
The experience demonstrated how effective systems balance efficiency, quality, safety, and the needs of the people performing the work.
Key Takeaways
McMaster-Carr reinforced the importance of process discipline, attention to detail, and continuous improvement. Working within a highly standardized operation taught me that small mistakes can become significant problems when repeated at scale, making consistency and accuracy critical to long-term success.
The experience also influenced how I think about leadership and system design. Strong processes should not only achieve operational goals, but also support the people responsible for executing them. This perspective later influenced how I approached employee development, process design, and business operations in subsequent roles.
